How can we use Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help our clients make positive changes in behaviors they might feel ambivalent about?
In this 2.25-hour “refresher” course, participants will briefly review the fundamentals of MI (including the MI spirit, the four processes of MI, and the core microskills) and then engage in focused practice on how to use the MI microskills to evoke and strengthen a client’s own motivation to change. Areas of emphasis include how to thoughtfully use reflective listening to move a conversation toward change, and how to flexibly employ MI-consistent communication skills to respond to sustain talk or “stuckness” in the change process. In this interactive training, participants will have the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways including lecture, demonstrations, discussions, and experiential role-play activities designed to give them a richer understanding of the use of motivational interviewing in diverse settings.
